NAVGPS

How-To

Find out whether your signal gets through

Terrain is what stops a handheld, and terrain is the one thing the app can see. Drop a target and NavGPS profiles the ground between you and it; sweep for coverage and it shows everywhere you could be heard from.

Steps

  1. Open the radio planner
Map tab → the radio icon in the left tool column.
  2. Drop a target
Tap where the other radio is. NavGPS reads the elevation along the line between you and says whether the path is clear or blocked, and by what.
  3. Sweep for coverage
Coverage sweeps the terrain around you and shades where you can be heard from, which is the better tool when you are choosing where to stop.
  4. Move and re-check
Ridges matter more than watts. Re-run it from a hundred metres up the hill and the answer often changes.

Worth knowing

  • This is a prediction from terrain only. It cannot see trees, buildings or weather — treat it as planning guidance, not a guarantee.
  • It uses the same elevation data the 3D view and slope shading already cache, so it works wherever that has been sampled.
