NAVGPS

How-To

Map the ALPR cameras along your route

Automated licence plate readers are mapped in OpenStreetMap like any other street furniture. NavGPS downloads them for an area, stores them offline, and draws them on the map.

Steps

  1. Download them for an area
Open the download sheet and include the plate-reader layer, or use the camera icon in the tool column and download what's around you.
  2. Turn the layer on
The cameras draw as small indigo discs, deliberately unobtrusive.
  3. Zoom in to see them
Zoomed far out the app says to zoom in rather than drawing thousands of overlapping marks.
  4. Tap one
Each shows what OpenStreetMap records about it — operator and direction, where contributors supplied them.

Worth knowing

  • The locations come from OpenStreetMap, the same public map data the app routes on, so they work offline once downloaded.
  • It is as complete as volunteers have made it. An absence of marks is not evidence of an absence of cameras.
