How-To

Look at the ground in three dimensions

A contour map tells you a slope is steep. A 3D view tells you what it looks like. The explorer drapes satellite imagery or topo over real elevation and lets you fly around it.

Steps

  1. Open the 3D view
Map tab → the 3D terrain icon in the left tool column.
  2. Pick a drape
The Sat/3D toggle switches between satellite imagery and the topo map over the same terrain.
  3. Exaggerate the relief
The exaggeration control stretches the vertical scale, which makes subtle terrain readable without changing where anything is.
  4. Turn the phone
It is best in landscape, where there is room for the horizon.

Worth knowing

  • It works offline anywhere you have already downloaded the map.
